Expanding Effective Contraceptive Options (EECO) is a USAID project that supports the introduction of new contraceptive options, including the Levonorgestrel Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS), to give women access to a broad choice of methods. The LNG-IUS is a long-acting reversible contraceptive that may appeal to women who seek reduced menstrual bleeding or find the method’s side effects easier to tolerate than those of other methods.
This program brief focuses on the lessons learned through the EECO project’s pilot introductions of the LNG-IUS in Zambia and Madagascar from 2016 to 2018. The brief lays out the steps taken by WCG Cares and its partner PSI to bring the product to market—from registration and quality assurance to consumer research, service delivery, and evaluation studies.
