Support for International Family Planning and Health Organizations 2: Sustainable Networks

About Us

The Support for International Family Planning and Health Organizations 2: Sustainable Networks (SIFPO2) is a USAID-funded program designed to strengthen family planning programs and other health services worldwide, with a focus on strengthening private sector channels including social franchise networks. The program was initiated in April 2014 and is effective until December 2020. USAID Missions have partnered with SIFPO2 to deliver ‘field support’ programs in a broad range of health areas, typically with access to family planning at their heart.

As well as scaling-up and improving access to family planning products and services worldwide, SIFPO2 focuses on improving the health of markets for sustained use. This requires increased effectiveness and better integration of the private sector into the health system in areas such as:

  • Health financing mechanisms
  • Increased and improved quality assurance
  • Improved monitoring and reporting systems
  • Innovation in cost recovery enterprises. Under Result #1 of SIFPO2, we will partner with others to improve systems and processes for quality assurance of family planning products and services. This work will include:
  • Participating in new or existing certification and whole-site accreditation programs and providing clinical staff, franchise providers and local partners with increased access to continuing medical education.
  • Enhancing client record management and integrating private sector data into national level health management information systems. This integration will help maximize collaboration, coordination and effectiveness with national-level partners.
  • Identifying and eliminating barriers to youth access to family planning at both the policy level and within our own networks.
  • Expanding the reach of our networks to include additional non-clinical, rural and community-level access points. SIFPO2 will also tackle the challenge of sustainability by analyzing the health financing landscape in a subset of priority countries, and will develop strategies to increase access for service delivery networks to public and private sector sources of financing.
  • Local Network Members: These country level private, not-for-profit organizations implement a range of health programs in 67 countries, 34 of which include family planning.
  • Social franchise networks: In 26 countries, PSI network members operate social franchise networks that primarily consist of privately-owned clinics and hospitals. Approximately half of all our franchise networks also include branded service and product delivery points beyond the clinic setting, such as community health workers, mobile or outreach teams, pharmacies and drug shops.
  • Social marketing networks: PSI network members have robust product distribution and social marketing networks that include pharmacies and drug shops. In addition, SIFPO2 will continually develop local staff as leaders and providers of South-to-South technical assistance, form new global learning partnerships and expand the use of successful public-private partnership and health services integration models that expand access to and uptake of family planning.
