Kigali, Rwanda — On July 17th, 2010, PSI/Rwanda and the National University of Rwanda (NUR) officially launched a youth radio program entitled Radio ABAJENE!, funded with the generous support of the American people through United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Radio ABAJENE! is aired every Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30 PM Central African Time on the NUR radio station known as Radio SALUS, which broadcasts from Southern Province in HUYE District on 97.0 FM and 101.9 FM.
In order to build the capacity of Rwandan youth, the radio show is animated by young NUR students from the faculty of arts, media and social science, school of journalism and communication. NUR’s auditorium, which normally accommodates 1500 people seated, packed in an excited crowd of more than 2600 people (university, secondary students, parents and out- of-school youth). Directors, dean of students and professors of different departments in the campus also attended the ABAJENE! Launch. Celebrities and fans of Radio ABAJENE! entertained the crowd: MAKANYAGA Abdoul (the best Rwandan “old school” music and His IGISOPE Band); Miss JOJO (the Rwandan best female artist of 2009) with her young belly dancers; INYAMIBWA (NUR cultural troupe dancers); Afro beat singer TETE Divine; “new school” R&B singers ROSY and CHOUCHOU from NUR; Hip Hop artist KARANI and RICKY YASHA; and many more MCs, made the event fabulous.
Radio ABAJENE! is part of the ABAJENE! DUSHISHOZE movement, meaning Youth! Think about it in Kinyarwanda. The movement targets in-school and out- of-school youth aged 15-24, but also aims to reach their parents/caregivers, younger siblings, teachers and local youth leaders who provide social support to youth. The objectives of the ABAJENE! DUSHISHOZE movement are to help youth to:
- Determine their long-term goals and how to achieve them;
- Know the dangers that can put their long term goals and future at risk- and take action to avoid them;
- Know the facts about sex, reproductive health and HIV (know themselves and their body);
- Be confident to make decisions for themselves and to communicate them clearly to others;
- Respect decisions of others;
- Feel comfortable speaking openly with their boyfriends/girlfriends about sex, and confident to assert what
- they want and don’t want;
- Feel comfortable speaking openly with their parents, close friends and other youth about sex, reproductive
- health and HIV/AIDS.
Over the next six months, Radio ABAJENE! will create ABAJENE! listening clubs in all districts of Rwanda in order to get feedback on the discussed topics and to promote behaviors that can help youth to achieve their long term goals and continue to build a strong Rwanda.
