From 21st to 24th of August 2011, a delegation of parliamentarians of the Kingdom of the Netherlands visited Mozambique. Lawmakers hoped to obtain information about the political and socio-economic development of the country as well information about the programs and projects being implemented in cooperation between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Mozambique.
The delegation was composed of the following parliamentarians from the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Parliament of the Kingdom of the Netherlands:
- Henk Jan Ormel (Christian Democratic Party – CDA),
- Ingrid Caluwé (Party for Freedom and Democracy -VVD),
- Sjoera Dikkers (Labour Party – PvdA),
- Johan Driessen (Freedom Party – PVV),
- Kathleen Ferrier (Christian Democratic Party – CDA),
- Wasilla Hachchi (Democratic Party – D66 ), and
- Arjan El Fassed (Green Party – GroenLinks).
During their stay in the country, the parliamentarians visited the provinces of Manica, Sofala and Maputo City. They met with His Excellency Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Henrique Banze, His Excellency the First Vice-President of the Assembly Lucas Chomera, members of the Parliamentary Commission for International Relations, His Excellency the Mayor of Beira Daviz Simango and other local authorities.
In the province of Maputo City, in addition to meetings with government and parliament, the parliamentary delegation met with civil society organizations and academics, and conducted a visit to the Polana Canico B market, and visited a sexual and reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS program implemented by PSI.
In Sofala Province, the visit focused on the activities of social protection and child protection. The delegation met with representatives from the Provincial Directorate of Women and Social Action (DPMAS), National Institute of Social Action (INAS) and the Provincial Directorate of Registries and Notaries (DPRN), and, together with representatives of UNICEF, visited the Community Committee for the Protection of Children and families benefiting from the Food Subsidy Program (FSP) and the National Birth Registration. The delegation also visited the port of Beira and attended a joint presentation of the Railways of Mozambique (CFM) and the Dutch-Mozambican company Cornelder Mozambique.
In Manica Province, the work of the parliamentary delegation involved the private sector and water sector. In Chimoio, the parliamentarians visited a cheese factory that had the financial and technical support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Also, the delegation, accompanied by representatives of the National Water Directorate (DNA), the Provincial Directorate of Public Works and Housing (DPOPH), FIPAG and UNICEF, visited the activities of the One Million Initiative, through which the government and partners are building water infrastructure to benefit 1 million people in some rural areas. The delegation also visited the Center for Water Distribution for the city of Chimoio, integrated into the Project Chicamba, which consists essentially of the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure for collection, treatment and distribution of water for city dwellers in Chimoio, Manica, Gondola, Tete and Moatize with funding from the Governments of Mozambique and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
