On the opening day of the World Economic Forum on Africa, the President of Tanzania and his Minister of Health joined PSI’s partners at United Against Malaria to underline the importance of seizing the opportunities around the FIFA World Cup to deliver a lasting legacy in the fight against malaria.
“There are countries on this planet that have conquered malaria,” said the President of Tanzania, His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, at an afternoon press conference. “We too in Africa, if we pool our efforts, we too can succeed in the not too distant future to conquer malaria.”
The press conference was jointly hosted by the United Against Malaria partnership – represented by Right to Play, MTN and Standard Bank Africa – and the African Leaders Malaria Alliance. PSI is one of the founding partners of United Against Malaria, which is a partnership of football teams, celebrities, health and advocacy organizations, corporations and individuals who have united ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to help achieve universal access to mosquito nets and malaria medicine in Africa by the end of 2010.
The UN Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, and the head of the US President’s Malaria Initiative, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, also spoke in support. But the real treat came as the press conference came to a close when Yvonne Chaka Chaka – a South African singer dubbed the “Princess of Africa” and a Roll Back Malaria Goodwill Ambassador – broke into song, calling on all the press conference participants to do right by their children and their children’s children by addressing the scourge of malaria today.
