About 30 countries in Africa have successfully launched Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) programs. While evidence of the effectiveness of iCCM has been well documented3, there are gaps in quality of care and a lack of quality improvement framework. In 2014, a review of programmatic evidence in 29 iCCM programs, implemented mostly in Africa concluded that “large, multi-faceted, iCCM programs, with strong component of training, supervision, which included additional support of equipment and supplies, seemed to improve quality of care outcomes”. However, this study could not identify any uniform quality of care concept or framework. Another iCCM review commissioned by the Global Fund in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO in eighteen African countries in 2018, also concluded that “checklists for supervision to check quality of applied services were lacking”. Because of this, there is a need to create a standardized framework for iCCM quality improvement.
