The Princess Inaara Foundation, founded by H.H. the Begum Aga Khan, in partnership with German Foundation “Ein Herz für Kinder” (A Heart for Children), has worked with PSI since early 2010 to prevent pneumonia related deaths of children under five in Myanmar. Through the Provision of Pneumonia Treatment to Children in Myanmar project, over 155, 000 children have been provided with pneumonia diagnosis and treatment services, in even the remotest areas of this isolated country.
Pneumonia is the leading killer of children under 5 worldwide, causing the death of one child every 15 seconds. Affecting the lungs of the child through an acute respiratory infection (ARI), the number of childhood deaths caused by pneumonia is greater than those caused by malaria, HIV and measles combined.
With a population of approximately 55 million, Myanmar’s isolation and political context has contributed to the chronic underdevelopment of the formal health sector. A United Nation report classifies Myanmar as one of the 49 least developed countries in the world. Under-five mortality rates are high, estimated at 107 per 1,000 live births and pneumonia remains the leading cause of death of children under five in Myanmar.
Since 1995, PSI/Myanmar has established robust health and social programs that aim to save thousands of lives. Tapping into this network of trained professionals, the Foundation’s overall goal is to deliver pneumonia prevention and treatment programs to reduce child under 5 mortality in Myanmar. Now entering its second year, the project aims to continue to educate caregivers of children under 5 to identify early signs and symptoms of ARIs, seek early treatment and support their child to adhere to pneumonia treatment.
Treatment services supported under the pneumonia project are supplemented by behavior change communications strategies such as health talk sessions provided to mothers and expectant mothers at the village level.
Throughout the three year period of this project, the Princess Inaara Foundation in partnership with “Ein Herz für Kinder” and together with PSI/Myanmar plans to scale up the provision of local level health services in Myanmar to provide over 700,000 treatments to children under 5 for ARIs, including pneumonia. This goal is in alignment with the global Millennium Development Goal to reduce child mortality.
