The “Here I Am” Campaign tells the personal stories of the beneficiaries of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
International civil society, supported by the organisation “International Civil Society Support”, today presented in Madrid the “Here I Am” Campaign.
MADRID, June 17, 2010 — 10 days before world leaders meet in the G8 and G20 in Canada where key decisions in maintaining the fight against AIDS in the international political agenda will be taken, the “Here I Am” initiative aims to raise awareness and increase Government support for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. People from Africa, Asia and Latin America who are affected by these diseases are the “ambassadors” of this campaign who through their testimonies will show political leaders in these events the important role that the Fund has in the access to treatment in these continents. The coming months are crucial for the Global Fund: it must raise at least 20 billion euros to continue its work at a time when there is evidence that international investment in AIDS is decreasing.
The Campaign was presented today in Madrid with the support of Tenemos SIDA and Gustavo Zavala, one of the “ambassadors” from Latin America who in his visit to Spain has also addressed members of Chamber of Deputies to tell his story. Honduran, 44 years old, and living with AIDS for over 20 years, Gustavo Zavala spent 15 years without treatment and with various infections until in 2002 the Honduran Government started to provide antiretroviral treatment and he received financial support from the Global Fund. Currently Gustavo is in good health and he wants to help by telling his story. He affirms that “if it were not for the Global Fund I would not now have access to treatment and I would not be alive” and also maintains that “if the Fund stopped offering treatment against HIV in Honduras the AIDS epidemic would return to the level it was at towards the end of the 90s and the Government alone would not be able to continue paying for treatment”.
The Global Fund, created in 2002 with the support of the members of the G8, has saved more than 5 million lives since its inception through the funding of programmes which offer treatment and prevention for the three great pandemics. In October the donors must renew their financial commitment for the next three years; a commitment on which thousands of beneficiaries depend and whose treatment, which for HIV/AIDS is for life, is at risk if the Global Fund does not manage to raise the necessary resources for the next three years.
For Michael Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund: “the ‘Here I Am’ Campaign presents the personal stories of those who are alive today thanks to the programmes supported by the Global Fund. It reminds us what we have achieved, but also the imperative need to continue increasing our efforts to provide treatment and prevention to all those people who need it.”
Vanessa López, representative of Tenemos SIDA, took the opportunity in the presentation of this initiative to remind the Spanish Government of its commitment: “What we ask of the Government is for it to keep its promise of 250 million dollars for the Global Fund for 2010 and, in the donor conference in October, for it to maintain the same levels of economic contributions which it has made until now.”
The tour of the “ambassadors” of the “Here I Am” campaign begins in Spain with Gustavo Zavala and continues with the presence of the rest of the “ambassadors” in the G8 and G20 Summit in Canada, in the International Conference on AIDS in Vienna, and in the United Nations Summit in which the Millennium Development Goals commitments will be revised next September in New York.
