By Marshall Stowell, VP External Relations and Communications, PSI
For almost 50 years, PSI has empowered women in the developing world to take control of their reproductive and sexual health, choosing when and if to start a family and how many children to have. In 2015, we helped nearly 4 million women avoid unintended pregnancy. But worldwide, 225 million women and girls still do not have access to the contraceptives they want, and 100 women die every day due to unsafe abortions. Preventing unwanted pregnancy prevents abortion.
President Trump’s reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy (also known as the Global Gag Rule) will rob women and girls of their agency and access to healthcare. With a $600 million budget for family planning and reproductive health programs, USAID would only have to cut $10 million in US funding for 38,000 more abortions to take place per year, according to the Guttmacher Institute. 30,000 of these abortions would be unsafe.
Where the current US administration has created obstacles to women’s healthcare, the Dutch have stepped in as fundraising leaders. This weekend, Lilianne Ploumen, the Dutch minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, launched She Decides– Global Fundraising Initiative, helping to make sure PSI’s work will continue. With the Netherlands’ help, we will ensure that millions of women and girls continue to be able to make safe decisions for their own bodies.
Several governments have already announced that they will join the Netherlands in funding the She Decides: Global Fundraising Initiative. With their help, together we will ensure that millions of women and girls continue to be able to make safe decisions for their own bodies.
With the help of the Rutgers Foundation, She Decides has opened bank accounts for individual contributions in USD and EUR.
You can help, too. To continue PSI’s important work helping women lead healthy lives and plan the families they desire, donate to either the Rutgers Foundation or directly to PSI here.
Dank je, Minister Ploumen, for assuming this vital leadership position.
