The number of children affected by water scarcity and lack of access to sanitation and hygiene services will increase amidst climate change. Health systems need sustainable, climate-proof sanitation solutions.
The good news: we’re on it.
By segmenting markets to understand what technologies are appropriate for different geographic areas, working with governments to establish quality standards that protect the water table, and introducing new on-site containment and treatment technologies, PSI builds resilient sanitation markets that mitigate the environmental impact of sanitation and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change now and in the future.
Here’s how:
SEGMENTING MARKETS FOR APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGIES
We know that one size doesn’t fit all. Different regions have varying climate conditions, infrastructure levels, and societal norms that impact the suitability of sanitation technologies.
By segmenting markets and tailoring sanitation solutions accordingly we’ve learned:
- In arid regions with water scarcity issues, waterless or dry sanitation solutions such as low-flush or composting toilets may be more appropriate.
- In regions with abundant water resources may prefer water-based technologies which need to be designed and managed to avoid pollution of water sources and increased strain on water supply.
WORKING WITH GOVERNMENTS TO ESTABLISH QUALITY STANDARDS
PSI works with governments to develop and set regulations and guidelines that promote eco-friendly sanitation practices.
- In Benin, we worked with the government to get a new product – digester systems – approved for use in areas with high water tables.
- In Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and Ethiopia, PSI has worked with national and city governments to strengthen policy around sanitation.
- In Cote d’Ivoire and Benin, PSI has worked with city governments to strengthen he enforcement of legislation related to landlords providing safe sanitation to their tenets.
- In Ethiopia, Liberia, and Benin, PSI has trained entrepreneurs, artisans, and masons on proper design and installation of toilets in line with government quality standards.
INTRODUCING NEW ON-SITE CONTAINMENT AND TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES
PSI’s market-based sanitation programs carry out climate resilient product development and support better selection of quality and durable technologies that are less sensitive to climate risks. Specifically, we:
- Construct sanitation facilities at higher elevations or with flood protection measures to withstand floods and rising sea levels.
- Test and build out business and service delivery models that support private sector and government to sell and deliver those products and services to vulnerable populations.
