How can a beauty queen contribute to the fight for clean drinking water and better sanitation in the developing world?
Miss Oxnard Latina, Amanda Rodriguez, wants to use the power of her voice as an advocate for Latinas across the United States to bring attention to PSI’s WASH programs. PSI’s Maria Dieter recently chatted with Amanda to learn why she chose PSI and what drives her to support sanitation as a cause.
Why did you choose to support PSI’s WASH programs? In 2016 there were several water issues that arose in the United States that made headlines. These events made me realize that there are many people not only in the United States, but across the world, struggling for the basic necessity of fresh drinking water and sanitation units. I believe individuals should not be deprived of these basic necessities.
How would you influence someone to support our work in sanitation? I think visual aids are an important tool to show the impact the lack of access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation units has on an individual and their community. In addition to this, it’s important to partner with local organizations to understand the context and culture in which these interventions are taking place.
What do you think is the most interesting thing about PSI? I think that the most interesting about PSI that attracted me personally to the charity was that it simultaneously works on different projects that are globally connected and locally rooted.
Amanda is competing for the title of Miss California Latina this Saturday, January 14. Buena suerte, Amanda!
