“They call him Prophet Elie.”
That’s how Chantal Kilembe describes her 5-year-old son.
She gestures to show how he lines up chairs in their home to play “church.” He corrals his friends to come sit as he preaches, waving a small Bible in his hand for emphasis.
Chantal has three children whom she loves dearly, but she doesn’t want any more.
“Life is difficult in Congo,” she says simply. Her husband can’t find work and the little money she earns selling fish and maize is all she has to feed her family, meet their basic needs, and cover school fees. Having more babies would mean having to spread resources even more.
You can do something to help women like Chantal. Take the Contraception Challenge and your contribution will help PSI reach more women who want family planning services.
Until December 31, an anonymous donor is matching all donations dollar for dollar up to $200,000. If we meet our goal, we will reach an additional 25,000 women.
Chantal learned she had family planning options two years ago when she took her son to a PSI-supported clinic to get treated for diarrhea.
As she waited, she joined a group of women who were listening to a PSI-trained community health worker discuss and demonstrate the mix of contraceptive methods available to them.
After her son was treated, Chantal asked the nurse, Papa Zebika, about her family planning options. She went home and decided with her husband that she would go back the next day and get an implant that would protect her against pregnancy for five years.
Chantal is happy with her decision and spreads the word to women in her community. “My desire is to see my children grow up, go to school and get good jobs,” Chantal says with conviction. “Family planning is an important part of that.”
If you believe that any woman who wants contraception should be able to access it, please take the PSI Contraception Challenge. Donate and help us reach our $200,000 goal this month so we can help 25,000 more women like Chantal get contraception when they want it.
