On April 1, 2014 thousands of South Africans grabbed their morning paper or switched on the radio news to hear of a new sex tax imposed by the government. After a recently conducted study showed over-population as the driver for many of the country’s challenges, the new law, advertisements said, would tax sexual acts based on both frequency and duration. South Africans wanting to engage in sexual activity would need to register by April 31st.
Looking like a front page news article in print (see below) and read with an official-sounding voice on the radio, the ads directed people to a website.
At first, the website appeared to be government-sponsored, but one click quickly revealed the elaborate April Fools Day prank:
Lovers+ is one of the primary condom brands of PSI South Africa. Positioned as the cool way to make safe sex fun, the Lovers+ brand lent itself well to the idea of fooling around and fooling the nation, all while promoting condom use.
