Taking center stage at this year’s Women Deliver conference was the theme of “delivering solutions for girls and women.” Throughout the world, an estimated 340,000 women die every year of pregnancy-related causes, most of which are preventable. Thirty-eight percent of pregnancies are unplanned, which lead to 42 million abortions every year. Many of these unintended pregnancies are high risk, occurring among women at the very beginning or very end of their reproductive years, or too soon following a previous pregnancy. Too often, abortions are unsafe and result in death or disability. To address these issues, Millennium Development Goal 5, to reduce maternal mortality, was amended to include Goal 5b, universal access to reproductive health services.
