Fact-based Approaches in the Toughest Places
PSI works in the fields of infectious disease and reproductive health in some of the poorest countries in the world. Canada has a long tradition of development activism, and its leaders historically knew the world where we work well. But in recent years, Canada’s role and voice were diminished, particularly in areas of reproductive health and rights. The reemergence of activist Canada under Prime Minister Trudeau is very welcome.
When the PM charted Canada’s new course in his instruction to Development and Francophonie Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, he insisted on evidence in decision-making, specifically on reproductive rights and maternal health issues. The previous Canadian government let ideology trump facts, particularly around the provision of safe abortion as part of a comprehensive reproductive health strategy.
