We are proud to announce that PSI has recently won a grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for urban sanitation for Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana in partnership with PATH and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP).
West Africa Sanitation Service Delivery (SSD) is a five-year, $15.8 million program to increase access to improved sanitation and waste management for households in urban and peri-urban areas. It aims to prevent the spread of disease and improve livelihoods, through the development of affordable, quality sanitation business solutions.
Along with our partners, we will be building the capacity of private enterprises and the public sector, and strengthening the linkages between the two, to create a sustainable sanitation marketplace in West Africa.
We are grateful for USAID’s recognition of our cutting-edge work in market-based approaches and that of the innovative partners on our team:
- PSI applies its unique global marketing and franchising experience to develop markets for health products and services for low-income consumers. Using a deep-understanding of consumer and business needs, PSI implements market-based approaches to sanitation in twelve countries, in both rural and urban areas. PSI will ensure sanitation products and services are accessible and used within the low-income communities of Benin and Cote d’Ivoire.
- PATH blends the entrepreneurial spirit of business, the scientific expertise of a research institution, and on-the-ground experience of an international NGO. PATH has worked successfully in dozens of countries to commercialize solutions in the field of water, hygiene and sanitation. PATH will apply expertise in product development and financing to accelerate market-based solutions and build partner capacity across all three program countries.
- WSUP specializes in urban water, sanitation and hygiene and has developed innovative and sustainable approaches, bringing water and sanitation to nearly two million people in Africa and Asia to date. WSUP offers a creative package of private sector, NGO, and academic expertise, to equip the public and private sectors with the capacity and incentives to serve everyone in their city. WSUP will pilot sanitation service delivery models in urban and peri-urban areas in Ghana and build capacity of team members to support enterprises in Benin and Cote d’Ivoire.
