The Public Library of Science (PLoS) published a collection of innovative studies today highlighting the impact and future implications of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) services for HIV prevention. The studies show the significant contribution of the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in support of a rapid expansion of this proven, low-cost and safe procedure, and they underscore how VMMC services can be implemented and sustained at scale.
Showcasing evidence from five African countries, the collection explores four key themes:
The collection is a joint collaboration of PEPFAR (through USAID, CDC, DOD), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ministries of health and defense in Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa and implementing partners, including PSI.
In collaboration with members of the PSI/Zimbabwe VMMC team, PSI’s Karin Hatzold – Deputy Country Director of PSI/Zimbabwe and Director of the Gates Male Circumcision Partnership Project – participated in writing or co-writing several of the studies, which feature results from PSI/Zimbabwe.
