In less than 2 weeks, the 21st International Harm Reduction Conference will open in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
There are an estimated 15 million injecting drug users in the world today, mostly living in the developing world. Outside Africa, IDUs account for about 1 of every 3 new HIV infections in the world. The conference participants will be discussing and debating current projects and future plans to help serve the health, social and other needs of this highly vulnerable group, with a focus on designing and scaling up effective projects to reduce the spread of HIV and other blood borne viruses among drug using populations.
Over five days (April 25-29), the conference will bring together harm reduction experts, donors, implementing agencies, drug users and advocates, policy makers, and others from all over the world.
PSI will be well represented at the conference. PSI’s IDU work in China, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico and Central Asia will be highlighted in various posters and on other fora. And we’ll keep you up to date as the conference progresses, with daily updates.
Here on this website, Rob Gray, PSI’s Injecting Drug Users Technical Expert and writer of the blog Issues in Injecting Drug Use, will provide daily updates on the conference.
