On Monday, July 25, 2011 in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico, under the framework of the XII National Congress of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections, PSI/Mexico and its local NGO partner Programa Compañeros, launched the Mexican Harm Reduction Network, REDUMEX.
Civil Society, federal and state governments and specialists in harm reduction convened to sign the “Declaration of Harm Reduction Principles” which addresses the three main objectives of the network:
- To establish Public Policy on harm reduction that prevents stigma and discrimination against drug users;
- To share best practices of harm reduction among organizations through technical assistance; and,
- To improve access by drug users to health resources and social support organizations.
Mexico now joins Argentina and Brazil as the only countries in the region that have formed harm reduction networks.
