Addis Ababa, July 8 (WIC) – Population Service International (PSI)/Ethiopia with funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched today Addis Cure, Addis Cure Plus and UL cure, three pre- packaged Sexually Transmitted infections (STIs) treatment kits (PPST Kits).
Speaking at the official launching ceremony of the kits at Haile resort in Hawassa town on Tuesday, Regional Health Bureau Representative, Dawit Mengistu, said that the newly released kits will make easy prescription for health care professionals all over the country for the treatment of STIs.
Dawit said the health bureau will assist PSI/Ethiopia through the Demand Creation and Promotion for Effective STI Treatment Service (DCP/STI) project and distributes these kits to contribute towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission.
Meskerem Abera, PSI/Ethiopia Project Manager, on her part said the packaging material is designed to provide information on drug compliance, correct condom use, partner treatment and HIV counseling and testing using pictorial illustration and description in a local language.
“The kits provide the correct drugs in correct doses and other useful items such as condoms, partner notification and referral cards and Supporting IEC materials,” she said.
The manager said that the kits contain antibiotics for treatment of the specific STI syndrome, condoms for prevention of re-infection and transmission during treatment, partner referral cards and medical insert that describes the contents, composition, the mode of applications, instructions on how to use the drugs, safe storage and other related information as per the guideline of the Ethiopian Food Medicine and Healthcare Administration and Control Authority (EFMHACA).
Since 2008, PSI/Ethiopia with support from CDC distributed 40,000 of the Addis Cure kit through private, public and NGO clinics and pharmacies in Addis Ababa and the surroundings, Meskerem indicated.
