The Global Fund currently contributes two thirds of all international financing for malaria, supporting 175 malaria-specific programs in 83 countries, with grants totaling US$ 5.3 billion. To date, these Global Fund-supported programs have distributed insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect 70 million families from malaria.
In order to maximize benefits the Global Fund has adopted a Voluntary Pooled Procurement mechanism with Population Services International (PSI) chosen to act as the procurement agent for all long-lasting insecticide treated nets obtained through this process.
In the course of the last year or so more than 40 million mosquito nets have been purchased by PSI, providing efficient, cost-effective distribution to some of the world’s most at-risk communities.
Uganda is one of the larger Global Fund recipient countries and, as part of a US$ 125 million malaria grant, has recently chosen to procure an initial stock of 7.2 million mosquito nets through the VPP process.
