Each year, 250,000 women die of cervical cancer worldwide. The majority of these deaths occur in India. PSI is working to ensure no woman dies from this preventable disease. The cervical cancer screening and treatment program in Uttar Pradesh, India, supported by PSI’s philanthropic partner Kathy Vizas, uses vinegar so that doctors can identify lesions and act to remove them quickly and efficiently, often on the same day. Following the initial pilot, the Government of the State of Uttar Pradesh has stepped in to expand the program to reach hundreds of thousands of women across the State.
