FOREIGN AID HALT JEOPARDIZES LIVES ACROSS 20+ COUNTRIES
On the Ground in Cote d’Ivoire
In Cote d’Ivoire, malaria is one of the major causes of death of children under 5 years old. Many of these deaths are preventable with the right detection, diagnosis, and treatment. In 29 nationwide districts, PSI-supported healthcare workers go door to door, armed with kits containing data collection tools and medicine. They refer patients to the nearest health facility for severe cases, but with their kits, they can treat uncomplicated cases immediately.
In just three months last year, these healthcare workers identified 29,495 cases of uncomplicated malaria in children under five years old and treated them on the spot with their kits.
They were counting on U.S. government funding to replenish 2,323 kits in the first quarter of 2025.
Our teams quickly pivoted in the wake of the funding termination to identify new donor partners, but these new partnerships take time. They need funding right now to replenish healthcare worker kits and keep malaria transmission rates under control, to prevent turning back the clock on decades of progress.
the Catalyst Fund Igniting action during crisis
In response to the current crisis, PSI is activating its Catalyst Fund, previously used to foster innovation and invest in promising new solutions. The Catalyst Fund will quickly deploy cash to address critical gaps in countries that lost a significant portion of funding due to the termination of U.S. foreign aid, ensuring continuity of lifesaving healthcare and building towards a sustainable future through non-U.S. government funding.
Health needs don’t pause. We’ve never done this work alone, and your contributions are urgently needed now more than ever to avoid interruptions in lifesaving care for those who need it most.
