DESCRIPTION
Expanding Effective Contraceptive Options (EECO) is a 10-year USAID-funded learning project supporting the introduction of new and underused contraceptive methods. It aims to address method-related reasons that discourage contraceptive use and to better meet the reproductive health needs of girls and women. Implemented in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia through pilot studies, EECO produces roadmaps for introducing and creating demand for a number of new and underused family planning products. The EECO Consortium successfully introduced three innovative contraceptive methods in six low- and middle-income countries: the Caya Diaphragm and Gel in Niger and Benin; the hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) in Zambia and Madagascar; and the Woman’s Condom in Malawi and Zambia. EECO is also contributing to the global learning agenda around product introduction through numerous peer-reviewed publications, guides, and toolkits.
