Today, people from all over the world will gather for the start of the 38th annual Global Health Council Conference in Washington, DC. Considering the monumental changes our world faces this year, we turn our focus to one: the world population reaching 7 billion. What does 7 billion mean for those of us in the global health world? At the GHC Conference, PSI (Population Services International), along with dozens of other international organizations, will embark on a conversation and hopefully some concrete solutions that addresses this question.
This year’s GHC conference will specifically address non-communicable diseases and how the health world is evolving to accommodate this change in the burden of disease.
If current demographic changes continue as anticipated, attention must shift to issues associated with increasing urbanization and problems such as violence, childhood obesity and the spread of infectious diseases. At the center of this developing conversation is the issue of balance – balancing current global health needs and those that will inevitably be upon us with the new generation of young people.
Some of the key questions of focus at this year’s GHC Conference include:
- What policy and program changes will be needed to address the demographic and epidemiologic transition?
- How will the diverse set of public and private sector stakeholders in global health – government officials, program implementers, donors, researchers, corporate parterns and civil society advocates – respond to these changes?
- How will the least developed countries adjust to these changes?
Along with being an active partner and contributor at the GHC Conference, PSI will co-host the “What’s Your Poo IQ?” Health/WaSH Advocacy Challenge beginning at the WaSHing to Improve Health in Developing Countries panel discussion on Tuesday evening at 5:15 PM. Conference participants playing “What’s Your Poo IQ?” will educate themselves on the importance of implementing clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) practices and programs while competing to win an Apple iPad 2, Amazon Kindle or Kodak Playsport Camcorder. To find out more and participate in the exciting event, grab a postcard at PSI’s booth and join the WaSH conversation at the GHC Conference.
