Pills by post, pills by prescription & telemedically-supported community health workers: African self-care models for abortion/postabortion care
Telemedically-supported abortion and postabortion self-care can increase access to services and be more responsive to patient needs and preferences than in-clinic options. There are various ways to configure digital and telephonic support for self-care in response to the constraints and opportunities of each context. Offering multiple and varying care pathways means we can reach a wider audience. Different models can cater to different levels of literacy and resources to meet patients where they are. We’ll present 4 African self-care models for abortion/postabortion care as implemented in Ghana, Cameroon and South Africa. Pills by post, pills by prescription & telemedically-supported community health worker provision are model design options that solve different problems and operationalise different values.
Speakers:
- Dr Louise Gilbert, Marie Stopes South Africa
- Victoria Satchwell, Abortion Support South Africa
- Elymas Dekonor, Marie Stopes Ghana
- Dr Zyh Akumawah, EasyHealth Cameroon
- Venny Ala-Siurua, Women on Web (Canada)
Organizers: Marie Stopes South Africa, Abortion Support South Africa, Marie Stopes Ghana, EasyHealth Cameroon, Women on Web
SELF-CARE AND EMPATHY WORKSHOP: BUILDING SELF-CARE EXPERIENCES THAT WORK FOR YOUTH
For this Discovery Exchange, we will run a skills-building workshop to support participants to learn and practice techniques to ideate creative approaches to designing self-care interventions for young people. We will first share how the approaches and mindsets of human-centered design (HCD) can help practitioners bring the principles of meaningful youth engagement (MYE) to life, grounding this theory in self-care examples.
Speakers:
- Joel Munyaradzi, HCDExchange Sr. HCD Lead, Zimbabwe
- Liz McNeil, HCDExchange Sr. Community Manager, Kenya
- Susan Towett, HCDExchange Youth Engagement Officer, Kenya
- Collins Ongola, PSI/A360 County Coordinator & HCDExchange Youth Leadership Hub Associate, Kenya
- Swarali Pandare, TinkerLabs & HCDExchange Youth Leadership Hub Associate, India
Organizers: HCDExchange, PSI/A360

PILLS BY POST, PILLS BY PRESCRIPTION & TELEMEDICALLY-SUPPORTED COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS: AFRICAN SELF-CARE MODELS FOR ABORTION/POSTABORTION CARE

Participants will learn about a number of different HCD approaches to brainstorming, and then break into groups to practice these techniques using a self-care scenario. Lastly, participants will learn ways that project teams can engage their different internal and external stakeholders in ideation to ensure the right voices are heard in designing self-care interventions. This session will encourage big, blue sky thinking, ask participants to adopt an optimistic and empathetic approach to designing interventions, and challenge them to engage young people as design partners at every step of the journey.
