Ensuring affordable basic health coverage for all calls for us to reimagine healthcare and design new ways to pay for it. At the Fifth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research, PSI is making a few bold commitments to build health systems that put more care and control in consumers’ hands. Here’s three ways you can join us:
- Learn how PSI and others use self-care as a new frontier in primary care to engage the consumer, and as a critical component of health systems to achieve universal health coverage. Hear how this extends care and access points so consumers get care how and when they need it.
- Join our session on Oct. 8 with the World Health Organization, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, PATH, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to understand what we mean by self-care and the current scope of self-care interventions. You’ll learn what self-care looks like in practice—even learning how to use these products—and discuss how to ensure self-care strengthens national health systems. We’ll profile HIV self-testing, subcutaneous DMPA (self-injectable contraceptives) and HPV DNA testing (self-collection), all examples of self-care.

- PSI recognizes that self-care is but one important frontier for primary care. Preview some of PSI’s innovative solutions to improve quality of care in mixed health systems (i.e. public and private provider networks).
- Join the Oct. 9 session along with Thoughtworks (Bahmni) and PharmAccess (SafeCare) to see tools used to assess and support health providers.

- Learn how PSI uses strategic purchasing in accredited, private health services in support of universal health coverage. Strategic purchasing reduces the burden on stretched public delivery systems, increasing quality and affordable access points to the user.
- Join our session with SHOPS Plus on Oct. 9th, which profiles PSI Kenya’s aggregator model. Explore more examples of health system strengthening throughout the conference during PSI’s four individual abstracts/poster presentations throughout the week.

When we approach care from consumers’ perspectives and develop solutions that are affordable, convenient and effective, we make universal health coverage more of a reality.
