Globally, 2.4 billion people do not have access to a toilet, of which nearly 1 billion defecate in the open. As a result, poor sanitation contributes to 1.5 million deaths from diarrheal diseases among children every year.
In addition, not having a safe place to defecate puts women and children at risk, and the lack of privacy is a source of shame and embarrassment for many women. In the state of Bihar, India, where 99 million reside, more than 85% of the population practice open defecation.
As part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Supporting Sustainable Sanitation Improvements (“3SI”) project, PSI has partnered with Unilever’s Domestos Toilet Academy to increase access to toilets by developing the sanitation market in Bihar.
Watch this video to learn more about how the 3SI project and partnership with Unilever addresses critical barriers to toilet ownership and use by:
- Increasing access to loans,
- Repairing the supply chain, and
- Conducting behavior change interventions that change attitudes and social norms related to sanitation.
