Project Activities and Highlights
HIV/AIDS
|
| • |
Behavior Change Communication (BCC)
The Safe Players Challenge soccer tournament was launched
in February 2006. The project’s target audience is factory and
agricultural
estate workers, who are at risk of exposure to HIV infection because
of their migratory status. Participating factories currently compete
in a series of football matches, which attract large numbers of
the target audience. PSI/Swaziland utilises this opportunity to
communicate safe sexual behaviour practices and to motivate consistent
and correct condom use.
|
| • |
Corridors of Hope
General
objectives of the are to promote correct and consistent
condom use, and to disseminate
information on the transmission of HIV to communities located
in and around border posts and along the main corridors that
link the different border posts. Specific target audiences included
truckers and public transport employees.
|
| • |
TRUST Team of the Year
The TRUST Team of the year intervention motivated soccer
fans to vote for their favorite regional team, to win high quality
soccer kits. This promotion helped increase the sales of TRUST
condoms and the games provided a venue for sensitizing fans about
the benefits of correct and consistent condom use.

Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
In 2005
over 9,000 clients were served at PSI-operated New Start Sites.
During
the
same
period
at outdoor
events, community rallies,
church meetings and trade fairs, New Start counsellors sensitized
over 20,000 people to the need for Counselling and Testing. PSI/
Swaziland re-launched the “Come In Let’s Talk” campaign and launched
the “Because Talking Helps” campaign.
PSI
offered VCT services and messages in
all of Swaziland’s 55 Tinkhundla (representational areas). In 2006
PSI is rolling out a four-pronged outreach model to faith-based
organizations, workplaces, communities and chieftaincies to
expand availability of VCT and decrease the stigma associated with
accessing
HIV counseling and testing services.

Research

| • |
PSI/Swaziland has regular program monitoring and
evaluation. In 2004 the platform conducted a Condom Intercept Survey
to evaluate the impact of condom promotion and behaviour change
communications activities. In 2005 a TRaC Survey was conducted
to better understand behaviors such as abstinence, condom use,
VCT use and partner reduction. In Q2 2006 PSI Swaziland conducted
its first MAP Survey to measure Coverage, Quality of Coverage & Access
to PSI condoms, any condoms and VCT services in Swaziland. PSI
Swaziland uses the results of these surveys to shape program design. |
