Project Activities and Highlights

HIV/AIDS

Youth Outreach
The SFH national youth outreach program, YouthAIDS, generates awareness about HIV/AIDS among township populations. YouthAIDS activities are carried out in the areas surrounding Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Youth peer educators spread the message of responsible sexual behavior through a variety of venues, including school resource rooms, parent-child workshops, street campaigns, community centers, transportation hubs and radio talk shows. SFH's mobile promotions unit conducts road shows in five of South Africa's provinces using an edutainment approach. Shows are often highlighted by the participation of local celebrities including musicians and television stars.
Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
SFH launched the New Start VCT network in 2004. New Start consists of three centers in the central business districts of South Africa's three largest cities — Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. In addition to providing VCT services from these centers, New Start also provides mobile VCT services that bring counseling, testing and referral services to communities, NGOs, churches and other partners in and around the three cities. The New Start VCT marketing campaign launched in early 2005.

SFH will expand its YouthAIDS program to all of South Africa’s provinces in 2007.
SFH will continue to work in collaboration with the National and Provincial Departments of Health, and will ensure its activities are complementary to those conducted by the government and other NGOs working in HIV/AIDS prevention.
