Malaria

Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLIN)
In September 2007, PSI began distributing Badbaado insecticide-treated mosquito nets through the private sector by using the existing wholesaler-retailer supply chain.  The nets are sold at a highly subsidized price to ensure access by the greatest number of people.

Communications campaigns have been developed to promote awareness of malaria.  PSI uses mass media communication channels, especially radio, and non-traditional communications channels such as drama, song, and poetry to educate communities about the importance of malaria prevention.

A second brand Gaashaanka Kaneecada was launched in 2007 for distribution through the public sector.  They have since been distributed to 31 public health facilities, mostly maternal and child health centers.  These nets are more heavily subsidized in order to target the most vulnerable groups: pregnant women and children under 5. A portion of the proceeds will revolve back into the clinics to facilitate operation in line with the national strategy for cost sharing in the health sector.

Future Plans

Safe Drinking Water
In the summer of 2008, PSI/Somaliland plans to introduce a simple, low-cost water purification tablet to ensure access to safe drinking water in Somaliland.  This point-of-use treatment tablet rapidly dissolves in water and kills micro-organisms that cause diarrhea and cholera.  Communication materials will be developed to ensure awareness and proper use.
