Project Activities and Highlights
|
Natural Disaster Relief
|
| |
Immediately after the October 2005 earthquake hit Pakistan,
PSI/Greenstar introduced PuR to survivors. Working with
UNICEF and other key partners, PSI/Greenstar has distributed
more than 7 million PuR sachets enough to treat 70 million
liters of water, supplying an estimated 70,000 families. Communication
and monitoring campaigns continue to be conducted among partners
and communities on proper use of PuR and the importance of safe
water and sanitation. Working with UNFPA, Greenstar is reaching
women in need with reproductive health products and services.
In addition, Greenstar is working to help 100 private health
providers rebuild their services in affected areas.

HIV/AIDS
|
| |
In addition to marketing of disease prevention products, Greenstar
has trained more than 700 providers; conducted behavioral, mapping
and population-based research amongst high-risk groups; established
the New Start clinics in Pakistan catering to high-risk groups.
Greenstar established a network of 30 local NGOs to motivate safer
behavior, and implemented a two-year peer-outreach program amongst
brothel-based female sex workers in the red light district in Hyderabad.

Malaria
|
| |
Greenstar initiated a small pilot project in 2004 to socially
market insecticide treated nets (ITNs) in four of the highest risk
malaria districts - Karachi, Hyderabad, Lasbela and Muzzafargarh.
The project is the first social marketing effort of its kind in
Pakistan and targets those at highest risk, especially pregnant
women and children under 5 years. Project activities include establishing
baseline data on knowledge, attitudes and practice of target audience
regarding malaria, its prevention and use of mosquito nets and
identifying and training local NGOs/CBOs in net distribution.

Reproductive Health
|
| |
Greenstar
Sabz Sitara (Greenstar) is among the largest private sector reproductive
health networks in the world. Greenstar has trained more than 17,000 private
health providers (female and male doctors, female paramedics, and pharmacists)
since establishing its continuing medical education and followup service
programs in 1995. It was the first, and remains the largest, such network
within the PSI world. Greenstar clinics are nationally recognized for delivering
comprehensive, affordable, international-quality health products and services
to more than 10 million low-income clients per year throughout Pakistan.
The network provides 19 products and services toward the objective of family
health for low-income Pakistanis. |

Child Survival
|
| |
Iron-Folic Acid, Multivitamin Supplements
Given the high rates of anemia among pregnant women in Pakistan,
Greenstar will soon be introducing an iron-folic acid supplement
to be taken during pregnancy to reduce the chance of birth defects
and reduce iron deficiency among mothers. The Vitalet multivitamin
is also being re-formulated to boost natural lifetime stores of
iron and folic acid for women of reproductive age. |
| |
Infant Food Fortification
56% of children in Pakistan suffer from iron deficiency anemia. In late
2005, Baby Active sprinkles were introduced containing a combination
of iron, vitamins and iodine to supplement the diets of children aged
6-24 months.

Tuberculosis
|
| |
DOTS
In Pakistan, tuberculosis (TB) poses a serious and growing
health problem: WHO ranks Pakistan sixth among the 22 highest burden
countries. With the full support and inputs of the National TB
Control Program, Greenstar added TB-DOTS to its portfolio of services
with funding from the Global Fund in 2005. This large scale project
to reduce TB-related morbidity and mortality expands and contributes
to the established national TB-DOTS strategy by increasing knowledge
and access to high-quality TB-DOTS information and treatment through
1500 Greenstar-trained private sector providers in 5 cities across
Pakistan. The program aims to achieve successful completion of
treatment of 35,000 TB patients, serving a total population of
25 million. |

Future Plans
|
| |
The Sabz Sitara (Green Star) name has become
synonymous with quality, affordable family planning in Pakistan.
Therefore, the organization will launch a nonprofit associate called
GoodLife to cater to the broader spectrum of health needs, including
safe water, nutrition, TB, HIV, and malaria.
Continue working to reestablish private health capacity in earthquake-affected
areas.
Raise funds for nationwide launch of PuR safe water treatment.
