Project Activities and Highlights

Malaria

Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets (ITNs)
PSI/Mali continues to run a successful program of malaria transmission awareness and prevention education. One part of the activities focuses on targeted distribution of long-lasting ITNs to pregnant women and children under the age of five in selected public health clinics. Since PSI/Mali launched its malaria prevention programs in mid-2004, 149,309 highly subsidized nets have been distributed through 115 rural public health clinics.

Home Retreatment Kits for ITNs
A separate program promotes the insecticide treatment of other, untreated nets with an easy-to-use home treatment kit. Specialized teams directly managed by PSI have sold 516,798 subsidized treatment kits since June 2004.

Reproductive Health

Social Marketing
A major component of PSI/Mali’s efforts is the social marketing of subsidized quality health care products that assist and encourage behavior changes. To encourage long-term sustainability of the distribution network, PSI/Mali has contracted with a private generic medicines distributor to assure nationwide distribution through all appropriate private commercial channels of PSI/Mali’s products. Since the private sector partnership was launched in 2003, the program has distributed nearly 13 million male condoms, 46,000 female condoms, 2 million oral contraceptives, and over 300,000 injectable contraceptives.
Family Planning Awareness
2005 saw the launch of the Government of Mali’s first nationwide campaign to promote better family planning. PSI/Mali played a key role in developing campaign themes and creating and producing many of the materials. PSI also coordinated the production of four TV and eight radio spots for the national campaign.
ProFam
In 2005, PSI/Mali launched, in collaboration with 20 private sector, for-profit medical clinics in Bamako, the ProFam family planning service network. Based on franchising principles, all the clinics have the same name and visual identity plus identical services with the same affordable prices. PSI provides the training in modern contraceptive technology for members of the clinic staff, and creates demand for the services in the neighboring communities. The program expanded to a total of 30 clinics in 2006.
Female Genital Mutilation
In late 2006 PSI/Mali conducted a situational analysis of female genital mutilation in Mali as a first step in developing a program to reduce female genital mutilation. The analysis focused on the current situation in Mali as well as the various activities taken on behalf of the Malian government and other actors.

Child Survival

Diarrhea Treatment & Prevention
Since 2003 PSI Mali has initiated a number of BCC activities to prevent dehydration due to diarrhea. This has included mass media campaigns focusing on the dangers of dehydration, how to prevent diarrhea and how to use oral rehydration salts.

HIV/AIDS

Targeting High-Risk Populations
PSI/Mali is continuing its partnership with Groupe Pivot/Santé Population, an umbrella organization grouping Mali's most effective NGOs working in community health. With technical support from PSI, GP/SP carries out peer education and awareness-raising activities targeting groups at high-risk of HIV infection. PSI/Mali separately produced and broadcast AIDS awareness spots on 60 community-radio station partners and on the national TV station. PSI also continues to provide quality and affordable voluntary counseling and testing services for HIV/AIDS at its L’Eveil centers. As of December 2006, over 18,000 clients had been counseled and tested at the sites.
Advocacy with Faith-based Organizations
PSI/Mali has worked with Islamic leaders across Mali since 2002. Activities focus mainly on informing – through facts and figures – leaders about the realities of HIV/AIDS in Mali. Participants are encouraged to discuss and debate ways and means that they, as leaders, can help spread awareness to their faithful about the reality of AIDS. “Good behavior” messages are also reinforced to followers during Friday prayers and key events throughout the year. During the last half of 2005, PSI/Mali began replicating a similar program with Mali’s Protestant and Catholic communities. By the end of 2006, specially prepared sermons had been read to over 750,000 persons across Mali.
Private-Sector Partnerships
In 2005, PSI/Mali developed no-cost public service partnerships with a leading private cell phone carrier and a private, cable TV company. Cell phone collaboration with Ikatel includes periodic SMS messages on health issues sent to more than 800,000 subscribers and health-promoting messages printed on one million pre-paid phone cards the company issued. The cable TV company offers free, scrolled text messages telecast regularly across the bottom of their subscribers screens. The messages feature both HIV prevention and family planning themes.

Future Plans

Increased distribution of contraceptive products with social marketing.
Development of multi-media campaigns discouraging discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS and promoting the abandonment of female genital mutilation, a practice widespread in Mali.
Expansion of its L’Eveil voluntary counseling and testing centers to regional locations.

PSI/Mali's HIV program utilizes mobile counseling and testing clinics to reach rural populations. Here, a counselor works with a patient in an abandoned building.
