Project Activities and Highlights
HIV/AIDS
|
| • |
Behavoir Change Communications (BCC) PSI/Kenya's
generic BCC activities include:
campaigns
to promote
delayed debut of
sexual activity by creating a social norm where abstinence is acceptable
among youth; promotion of voluntary HIV counseling
and testing (VCT) and prevention of mother to child transmission
of HIV (PMTCT) services; increasing accurate HIV self-risk assessment
resulting in greater practice of all prevention behaviors; and
increasing social support for consistent and correct condom among
high-risk
target groups. Campaigns are disseminated via mass
media, with additional support from interpersonal communication
networks in communities, schools and worksites. People living with
HIV/AIDS hold regular outreach activities in communities and workplaces,
bringing a human face to the virus to reduce stigma. |

Condom Social Marketing
The Trust condom advertising
strategy reinforces condom efficacy and encourages users to always
be
prepared.

Social Marketing of Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs)
In a country where approximately 90 children die daily of
malaria, PSI/Kenya is implementing the largest ITN social marketing
program in the world. The project aims to establish a "net
culture" in the country, utilizing
extensive marketing and education to encourage the population to
sleep under a treated net every day. The strategy includes a unique
rural kiosk-based distribution system that assures product availability
to those most at risk. Generic information campaigns also aim to
increase knowledge on malaria's causes, transmission, risk groups
and prevention methods, especially in the endemic regions of the
country and among pregnant women and children under five. |
| • |
Clinic Distribution of ITNs
In 2004, PSI/Kenya expanded its commercial ITN distribution network
to include public health antenatal clinics. By selling highly
subsidized ITNs via this channel, PSI/Kenya is able to efficiently
target high risk groups of children under five and pregnant
women. As a result of this strategy, monthly sales have quadrupled
and it is likely that Kenya will be one of the few countries
to reach the Abuja targets for household ownership and use
of ITNs.

Child Survival

Safe Water Systems
Diarrheal diseases are among the top five major causes
of mortality in children under five years. Current estimates show
that Kenya has an annual incidence of between 3.5 and 4.6
diarrhea episodes per child. While boiling is the primary method
of treating water in households, most Kenyans living in rural areas
cannot afford the wood fuel that is the preferred energy source
for boiling. WaterGuard, PSI/Kenya's brand of dilute chlorine
water purification kit, inactivates pathogens that cause diarrhea
and
is affordable and easy to use.
PUR Purifier of Water, targeting populations served by
turbid domestic water sources, has grown its use in this category
through
its double
action of clearing murky water as well as disinfecting it for domestic
use. |

Family Planning
Femiplan oral and injectable contraceptives were launched in Kenya in 2000,
and have continued to supplement government supplies. Less than half
of married couples in Kenya use any modern form of contraceptive, and
the program aims to bridge this gap by distributing quality products
to couples wishing to plan their families. |

it from bacteria that causes cholera, diarrhea and other fatal diseases
that are rampant throughout Kenya.
