PSI in Ethiopia
Founded in 2003, PSI/Ethiopia is the
local platform of PSI, and has national
programmes in malaria, child survival
and HIV/AIDS.
|
Donors
Major donors include the governments
of the United States, United Kingdom,
UNICEF, United Nations Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs, the
Global Fund and Procter and Gamble.
PSI/Ethiopia’s 2007 revenue budget is
$1.9 million (estimated). |
|
Partners
Local partners include Federal and Regional Ministries of Health and of Water
Resources, the HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Organization, the Ethiopian Public
Health Association, the Medical Association of Private Practitioners in Practice and
other local agencies. |
|
| Malaria
In 2004, PSI/Ethiopia launched SafeNite, Ethiopia’s first
locally branded and commercially available long lasting insecticide
treated mosquito net, and now markets a range of
brands including fully priced, non-subsidized nets in urban
areas, and free nets that are made available in rural areas to
vulnerable communities. Nearly one million mosquito nets
have now been distributed by PSI in Ethiopia. These activities
are supported by branded and generic communications
campaigns, including radio, billboard, television and interpersonal
communications approaches in multiple languages
that also support mosquito nets being distributed for free
by the Ministry of Health. |
|
| Child Survival
PSI/Ethiopia has
programmes in
diarrhea prevention,
de-worming,
salt iodization and
pneumonia treatment.
In 2006 PSI/
Ethiopia launched
two complementary
home based
water purification
products under the
brand names WaterGuard
and PUR,
Purifier of Water®, and has now distributed sufficient product to treat over three billion liters
of safe water across Ethiopia. PSI/Ethiopia’s
water treatment activities, which included
the training of over 5,000 community health
agents, formed a critical part of the Ethiopian
Government’s efforts to control a national
outbreak of acute watery diarrhea in 2006
and 2007. PSI/Ethiopia will launch pre-packaged
treatment kits for both pneumonia and
de-worming supported by communication
campaigns in late 2007, and will support the
Ethiopian Government’s universal salt iodization
programme through
a mass media communication
campaign when
it launches at the end of
2007. |
|
| HIV/AIDS
PSI/Ethiopia has been
implementing a workplace
HIV/AIDS and
tuberculosis education
programme
since 2005, which
has reached around
20,000 employees
in over 30 large
companies. In 2007
it began promoting
mobile voluntary
HIV counseling and
testing services in
partnership with
Abt Associates, and
is soon to begin
a comprehensive
programme for the
treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted
infections with a pre-packaged treatment
kit. Also in 2007 PSI/Ethiopia introduced a
basic care package to help prevent opportunistic
infections such as malaria and diarrhea
that can prove fatal for people living with HIV
and AIDS. The package, launched in partnership
with Save the Children is designed for
children living with HIV and AIDS, and includes
mosquito nets, water purification systems,
soap and other important items, as well as
educational messages for the mother. |
