Lubricant

The use of water-based lubricant with latex condoms may reduce the risk of STI and HIV transmission by reducing the probability of condom breakage. PSI primarily distributes and markets water-based lubricant with male and female condoms as a complementary HIV prevention product.

Research conducted by PSI in Laos and Thailand found that men who have sex with men who are consistent condom users and non-users were more likely to use condoms if water-based lubricants were available. Successful lubricant social marketing approaches include packaging lubricant with condoms, creating demand by distributing free samples, and developing communication campaigns and outreach activities to encourage lubricant use. PSI supports lubricant social marketing in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.
