Malawi: Delayed Sexual Debut Campaign Awarded

BLANTYRE, Malawi — PSI/Malawi has been selected as a winner of the Global Media Awards for Excellence in Population Reporting in the category of ‘Best Combined Media Effort on Behalf of Population’ for their Real Man/Real Woman Delayed Sexual Debut Music Video Special. The Population Institute’s Global Media Awards honor journalists and members of the media who have made outstanding contributions to greater awareness of population, environment and resource issues.

In 2005, PSI/Malawi partnered with USAID to launch the Youth Alert! Real Man/Real Woman campaign which promotes delayed sexual debut and aims to change a common misperception among youth that to be a “real” man/woman, one must have sex. Other campaign messages include encouraging positive gender roles and addressing issues such as sexual violence and transactional sex.

Realizing that music can be a powerful and effective communication tool to engage young people, PSI/Malawi partnered with local musicians and the Music Association of Malawi in 2006, to produce six original songs and accompanying music videos centered on the theme of “A Real Man/Woman Waits.” The videos aired extensively on Music Splash, the most popular television show among Malawian youth aged 15-24. As a result of the popularity of the videos, PSI/Malawi developed the one-hour Real Man/Real Woman Delayed Sexual Debut Music Video Special, which aired on television in Malawi during April and May 2007.
